Cheetah Outreach

Finally, we proceed to the Cheetah Outreach Center which is an education and community-based awareness programme created to raise awareness of the plight of the cheetah and to campaign for its survival. We take you on an educational tour of the facility which is home to some more of our vulnerable and endangered animals and predators such as Caracal, Cerval Cat, Bat Eared Fox, and Black Backed Jackal.

Cheetahs are an endangered species, with less than 1 000 in South Africa and less than 7 500 in the world. Cheetah Outreach project was established at Spier Wine Estate in 1997, but has since moved to Somerset West. Its aim is to address the conflict between cheetahs and South African farmers.Cheetahs need to eat and often their meal of choice is livestock like sheep. This has resulted in farmers killing them to protect their commercial interests.

Cheetah Outreach breeds and trains Anatolian shepherd dogs, who have for centuries guarded flocks of sheep from predators such as cheetahs. Once trained, these dogs are given to farmers, ensuring that cheetahs find other sources of food and farmers can retain their livelihood. The funding for the breeding and training of these dogs, comes from the people who visit the Cheetah Outreach. You can get up close to these magnificent cats and learn all sorts of interesting facts about them. At a small extra charge, you can even get photographs of yourself touching a cheetah or handling a fluffy cub.

Cheetah Outreach

Tour guides at the facility are very passionate and knowledgeable - happy to answer any questions that visitors may have about cheetahs or Anatolian shepherds. While only the trainers are permitted to handle the temperamental dogs, visitors can see them to get an idea of their size and shape. The Cheetah Outreach not only provides employment opportunities for locals, but also excellent opportunities for South African and international volunteers. So come and meet these speedy predators and help contribute to the survival of the species.

Shark Cage Diving Tour

What you can expect

Going Great White Shark Diving in South Africa and more specifically a trip on the Slashfin, is a combination of goosebump thrills, education and relaxation on a luxury boat in the company of experienced experts and researchers! They will show you how to distinguish between a male and female shark and how to identify a specific shark by its unique dorsal fin and scars. The 20 - 25 minute boat trip to where the activity is to take place, is by itself an exhilarating adventure.

Named after a legendary 3,3 m male shark with a very distinctive dorsal fin, the Slashfin is a unique, multi-million rand aluminium boat custom designed for speed, stability, safety and space and can comfortably accommodate 40 passengers and the crew at a time.

On any given day, we also usually see at least two or more members of the Marine Big Five - sharks, dolphins, whales, seals and penguins, as well as several bird species.

Here is a brief breakdown of what to expect:

  • Before the trip guests meet at the Great White House in Kleinbaai
  • You will receive breakfast or lunch and register your wetsuit size
  • Guests receive a pre-trip safety briefing about what to expect during the trip and a biological background on great white sharks
  • We then take a 200m stroll down to the harbour to board Slashfin
  • Travel time to Dyer Island is approximately 20 minutes, with the shallows being a short 10 minute ride (where we anchor depends on where the sharks are)
  • On average, we anchor for 2 hours, but this depends on shark activity, conditions, as well as number of divers
  • Weather permitting, we take a quick trip through the infamous Shark Alley
  • Lastly, a debrief in the Great White House with soup and bread to warm you up.
  • Cash Showers available to freshen up before departing on your next adventure.

Price: R2650 pp excluding Hotel pickup and dropoff Price: R3230 pp including Hotel pickup and dropoff Duration: 2 hours

Here is what you need to take with:

  • Most importantly bring your swimsuit/bathing costume.
  • We recommend some warm clothes – even in summer it can get chilly at sea.
  • A camera, sunscreen and a hat/cap in summer or a beanie in winter.
  • We provide a meal on arrival: breakfast or lunch depending on time of trip; snacks on board; and soup and bread on return to land.
  • You will receive a numbered bag with a wetsuit and a clean towel.
  • We provide booties, masks and weight belt.
  • Cash Showers available to freshen up before departing on your next adventure.
  • We are generally able to put our masks over glasses but we highly recommend you rather wear contact lenses if possible. We do not carry prescription masks and should you have your own, please bring it with.

* We highly recommend guests who are prone to any kind of motion sickness (or are unsure if they are) to use anti-nausea medication well in advance. Better to be prepared!
